Over on the Facebook page for RetroEngine Sigma users, a chap called Greg Auletta has put up a link to an image that once flashed will turn your RES into an Android TV box. It will also allow you to play games supposedly, but I had no luck with that. Hopefully I'll get some guidance to sort that out in the near future, but I thought that I'd share my initial experience.
If you want to try this out, Greg recommends a 16Gb Sandisk Extreme U3 micro SD card. He warns that not all cards have the same capacity, and unzipped, the image clocks in at about 16.03Gb, so be advised*. I didn't have a U3 card available, so I went with a 32Gb Samsung Evo class 10 for this test. Greg also reckons that a slower card could be buggy. You can use a joypad to navigate around, but I didn't find a way to get out of menus without hitting escape on a usb keyboard, and to be honest, a trackball mouse was easier to navigate with. I will be trying a wireless keyboard/mouse combo controller tomorrow. I have no idea if it will be compatible, but we'll find out. Hopefully I'll be able to connect the dongle to the OTG at the back and leave the USBs free for controllers or possibly a flash drive.
The first thing that you need to do it get the image file. It's a 2.8Gb download, so download and unzip:
drive.google.com/file/d/0BzycJlZy5WsWMUFKLWx4bG1ubHM/view
As ever, have a clean SD card ready to flash and use Etcher etcher.io/ to flash it with the 16gb-ATV-opilite.img file.
That's about it. To get things working, you just put the card in, switch on and it loads up reasonably quickly. Go to the settings and connect to your wi-fi. Hit escape to get out of the settings menu and browse the content. Blink TV didn't work for me here in the UK, but Mobdro and Terrarium TV did. I had mixed results with another selection.
I'm rendering and uploading a video that I'll add below later, so you can see my first bumbling attempt to use it. I will add any further thoughts or tips as I discover them.
Again, if anyone else tries this and has experiences good or bad, please share them. Many people who bought a RES expected a plug and play system and may not be the most technical of people, so I'm sure that they will appreciate any help.
*I just tried out a 16Gb Amplim U3 card, and it is too small for the image.
