Noob question here: what are the steps to setting up/configuring third party USB controllers? I would like to set up a wired Buffalo game pad (Snes style) as well as a wired Xbox 360 controller but have no clue even where to begin setting these up and the instructions on how to do this are still under construction on the doyodo website.

The quick and easy way is to use your supplied controller to get to the configuration by pressing START and selecting it. If you have your 3rd party controller plugged in, it should say that it sees two controllers. Press and hold any button on the controller that you want to set up, and follow the instructions. If it wants input for a button that your controller doesn't have (I'm thinking of you SNES style one here), just hold down any button until it skips to the next selection.
I'm not sure how it will work with your 360 controller, as I use a copycat version, but on that, if there in no LED light lit up around the silver X button, it's in digital mode, so you'll want to press that to get it lit up before going into the configuration. It may not work like that on yours, but mine is always in digital mode on power up. Another thing that you may want to do, once they're both set up, is go to the RetroPi menu and go into the RetroPi setup to set which controller you want as default on which emulators, and possibly set the joystick on your analogue controller to work as the D-pad. BTW, the first setting you see in the video below has the smoothing set to 'True', ideally it should be set to false. When in this menu, use your joystick to go up and down the selections and the Y button to select.

Thanks for your help! Got everything working now! It feels so much better playing nes and snes on the buffalo gamepad!
